By Della Fowler/Kent State NewsLab

The interpretation and enforcement of Title IX is subject to change with each administration. So when President-elect Donald Trump takes office next month, changes to women’s sports may follow.

Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. from K-12 programs to collegiate athletics it has had a profound impact on women’s sports, requiring schools and universities to provide equal opportunities for female athletes.

The outgoing Biden administration interpreted the law in a way that protected trans athletes.

Still, a 2022 USA Today investigation found 87% of FBS — the highest level of college football in the United States — athletic departments were not compliant with Title IX under the Biden administration.

Della Fowler spoke to experts and voters about what may change in 2025.
